• My Diabetes journey

On attending hospital back in November 2020 for a suspected DVT , i was also informed i had high blood pressure and a very high HBA1C of 101 …. yes, i was diagnosed diabetic. I was put on medication for my DVT and blood pressure indefinitely and given metformin to control my blood sugar.

2 years on and i’m happy to report that the DVT is under control and my blood pressure has dropped to a acceptable level.

Even better news is my latest HBA1C blood results came back with a reading of 37 , lower than what is termed as pre-diabetic.

I’m writing this remembering the fears and concerns i had at the beginning , various thoughts i had such as i’m at risk of a heart attack, kidney failure , going blind and loosing a limb or two. Other thoughts were what can i eat now ? , i’m going to starve !.

These things can happen if diabetes isn’t managed , but my results prove it isn’t the end of the world , just a few simple diet changes , a little exercise and attending a desmond course aimed at explaining everything i was going through and giving me the tools and information to beat this thing.

Over the last two years , i’ve dropped from 18 stone to 10.5 stone and feel much better , cutting the amount of carbs i was consuming both helped my weight and got my diabetic levels down. On my last doctors appointment , i was taken off the diabetic meds.

My journey hasn’t ended , it never will , although i have my diabetes under control , i have to keep it under control. eat the right foods in moderation , take a little exercise and chill out.
